I recently discovered Cindy Sample after a mutual friend pointed out she was a former classmate of ours. I'm surprised that I hadn't run across her books earlier as she writes just the kind of mystery I adore. I LOVED this book! The characters were well developed & likable. The plot was well developed and proceeded logically. As each twist was revealed, it brought us closer & closer to a well tied up ending that made perfect sense. I agree with one of the reviews I read: this is not a romance & if you are looking for a romance, then this is not the book for you. If you are looking for a good mystery, as I was, with likeable relate-able characters, with just the right amount of romance, then this is the book for you. I read it yesterday; and I mean yesterday. Once I started, I couldn't put it down, so read it in one sitting. I have ordered the other books in the series and can't wait for them to arrive. Well done!Product details

Dying for a Date A Humorous Cozy Mystery Laurel McKay Mysteries Book 1 edition by Cindy Sample Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
This is the harried, overweight single mom with obnoxious ex and intrusive mom who gets a handsome detective boyfriend at the end after being accused of the crime genre - which I love. This author goes for the witty subgenre and wins. She's not as funny as the best, but well worth snapping up. Took me a while to figure out who dunnit because I wanted it to be the obnoxious ex. Serves me right for letting the e motion take over. Note to authors try a heroine who's widowed. I can handle poverty without gritting my teeth. Note to readers online dating isn't the horror show the author portrays here, unless you stick to known bad choices like Match.com. I wish authors wouldn't perpetuate this fear-mongering just to get a cheap laugh. Stats say online dating isn't any more dangerous than meeting any other way, with the same % of married men. Lots of us found our forever mates online. End of rant.
This story is a hoot! I laughed at all the predicaments Laurel McKay finds herself in. And her feisty personality added to the fun. As a mystery, the plot was clever. I did not see the end coming. I think readers will relate to the humor of a woman juggling all her roles in life, especially as I struggling mother trying to date. We can all admire her for taking in stride the problems of a deadbeat ex-husband and clueless mother. At least she has the best of daughters who is always on her side. And her job at the bank, checking out loan applications, does come in handy as she finds herself sorting out motives for murder.
I really enjoyed this book. It was a quick, funny read. Laurel McKay is newly divorced mom of 2 kids and works as a bank mortgage loan underwriter. Laurel's life takes another turn when she decides it is now time to get back into the dating scene. She decides to give a local dating service a try named The Love Club. On her first date it ends abruptly when they get ready to leave and Laurel realizes her keys and cell are locked in her car so while waiting on AAA her date gets to forward with her and she hits and breaks his nose with his cell phone. She is now rethinking her decision but can't afford to lose the money she already paid out so she decides to give it one more try. So she sets up another date for later in the week but while she is waiting on the night to come she finds out her first date was killed the same night they were together and she is the number one suspect. The second date is here and she goes out while waiting for their order to come he gets a text and never comes back. Yes he is found dead and you guessed it Laurel is the suspect. The story goes on to follow Laurel and her friends as they go do sleuthing themselves. Funny believable characters. Can't wait to read next in series.
Laurel has joined a dating club. The only thing is... the first date goes way wrong when he attacks her in the front seat of his car. She has to hit him in the nose with his cell phone to get away. Then the next day, she finds out he was found dead. Laurel is questioned by the police and is a person of interest. She decides to give the dating service one more try. She meets a nice doctor. They have lunch and he asks her to have dinner with him. Well, you guessed it. The doctor gets a phone call during dinner and goes outside to take it. Laurel has been drinking the wine, goes to the ladies room, comes back and sees a big commotion going on outside. Her date has been found floating in the river.
This is a great book. The story is packed with a lot of twists and turns. Laurel is the police's main interest the whole way through. Read to find out how Laurel and her friends find the real killer. The ending will surprise you.
I enjoyed this book. Since I worked in a real estate office, I found the mom as a top Realtor a believable character. The main character, Laurel, works in a bank reviewing mortgage applications. Laurel signed up for a dating service & the 2 men she goes out w/are murdered. She becomes the prime suspect but 1 of the detectives is attracted to her (he has a daughter the same age as Laurel's son). He's a widower w/a daughter, she's divorced & has 2 children. She tries to track down the killer(s). All of a sudden her ex-husband seems to want to to back together w/Laurel, the detective is interested, her mom tries to set her up w/a successful Realtor in her office, her boss is sending out signals she should date people she knows & that he's interested, plus the dating service, so she's got a lot of choices. Well developed plot, interesting characters & a surprising, exciting ending. I would definitely recommend this book. I look forward to reading more in this series.
I've often wondered if I were to write a book, what could I possibly write about because working in the mortgage industry isn't too glamorous or exciting. How wrong I was! I can't express enough how tickled-pink I was to read this book and felt like I was 'at home' reading about loans, underwriters, real estate agents & appraisers. Yes, I can see your eyes rolling now. I loved the author's writing style of mystery and comedy. This book is a lite read that you can't take too seriously. Her one-liners and the main character's flippant attitude had me laughing.
